Back before the modern age parents were given the choice of the one pacifier available at their local pharmacy. Things have changed, big time! You can get a pacifier just about any where like a super market, baby store, pharmacy, rest/truck stops and more. But with all these options are we just choosing a pacifier because it’s available or because it’s the best one available for our little bundles of joy? Is a pacifier for a newborn adequate for a toddler? Let’s break down what they need.

Newborns/Infants (Up to 6 months)

Newborns and infants are the hardest critics to please. Their soft gums require softer pacifiers and also smaller pacifiers too! Often, a crying baby can be put to ease by giving them a pacifier to play with but what if they continue to cry? Aside from potentially issues like being sick, hungry, cold or wet, chances are the pacifier they’re playing with is irritating them. How can you tell? Simple!

If your child is not latching to the pacifier or immediately spits it out, they don’t like it! It could be too big, too soft or the shield is causing a breathing restriction. The easiest solution is to try different brands and softness of pacifiers. You can also try placing the pacifier in a freezer for some time. This gives the baby a new sensation in their mouths and holds their attention for some time.

6 to 12 months

Once your baby turns 6 months of age you need to change pacifiers. At this age they have stronger jaw muscles and begin to teeth. The smaller and softer pacifiers for newborns just won’t cut it. The better brands will have a size chart on the packing to help you determine whats best for your baby.

Like the newborns, you may have to test a few different brands to determine what your baby will best. At this age you can dip the pacifier into foods and drinks to give them a taste of real food too. When the baby begins to teeth you can also put the pacifier into the freezer for a little while. This will help reduce the swelling in the gums and allow them to continue chewing with sore gums.

12+ months

Doctors recommend to wean children off pacifiers at this age because it can impact speech development but this varies between children and how often they use pacifiers. You won’t need to change pacifiers any more because the same ones used for 6 to 12 months old are fine to use.

Keeping pacifiers clean

One of the biggest concerns with pacifiers is their cleanliness. They often drop to the floor or fall between furniture into some pretty gross places. The best way to prevent this from happening is with the use of a pacifier holder or a pacifier leash. Using this little tool will stop pacifiers from falling into unwanted places and getting them dirty. Also, pacifier wipes are available at most baby stores and are worth the money. Do not use baby wipes as they may have chemicals that may irritate a babies sensitive tummy.
